Why is it mathematically hard to build the stands for the Colosseum? How to finally build an arch that does not fall down? What is that funny looking polyhedron next to the angel? In this talk we will take a random walk through some occasions when artists decided (or were forced) to take mathematical ideas into their work and others when mathematicians decided to ask questions to pictures and buildings. Expect many pretty images and some math (but no golden ratio)!

All graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the graduate student seminar, this talk will be accessible to all graduate students in math and stats.

This seminar was made possible by funding from the McGill mathematics and statistics department and PGSS.
