  1. Where can I get the SPSS software ?
  • There are several ways to get hold of or use the software

  1. Is there a version of SPSS that runs on MAC OS X
  • Unfortunately, there is not a Student Version of the software available for MAC OS X.  There is a "Graduate Pack" version of SPSS, but this is not available at a discounted price at McGill (you can purchase it at the Computer Store at the McGill Bookshop, but it costs more than $200).
  • You can download a 30-day demo version for MAC OS X from http://www.spss.com/statistics/

  1. Do I really need to use the SPSS software ?
  • You don't need to use SPSS, but you will need to use some sort of statistical software.  SPSS has been identified by the client Departments for this course as the most suitable and useful software for students to learn about, but there are many other pieces of software that can do the same job.   I use the package R: see, for example www.r-project.org/ - which is a little harder to use than SPSS, but is available FREE for Windows, MAC anc Linux.  Unfortunately, I don't have time to teach R in this course, but if you have some computing knowledge, you might try downloading and using it.  There is plenty of help for R on the internet.

  1. Is McClave and Sincich Edition 10 useful for the course ?  The recommended text is Edition 11 ?
  • Yes, Edition 10 is very similar to Edition 11.

  1. Do I really need to buy the textbook ?
  • My notes are largely self-contained, so it is not absolutely essential, but the textbook is useful as it has many practice questions and worked examples.  I will recommend problems from the textbook for the tutorials.

  1. Will you be posting solutions to the problems you set from the textbook ?
  • No, but the TA has the solutions manual, and if you turn up to the tutorials he can give you the answers.  Also, if you come to the office hours, the TA and I can check your answers with you.

  1. How can I get the data sets from the textbook ?
  • The data sets discussed can be found on the CD that comes with the book.  If you cannot obtain any particular data set mentioned in the book, please email me.
