Should I be a mentor this year?
Yes! The DRP is an excellent mentorship opportunity and can be a very valuable experience to yourself as well as your students. Very often it can be a great way to relearn/ explore a topic related to your field of research.
How do I apply?
All Math grad students are welcome to join! Around early November we will send out the sign-up form. All grad students are encouraged to sign-up!
What is expected of a mentor?
Mentors are expected to propose a project, or at least decide broadly on a field and then guide their students in selecting a project. They are also expected to meet with their students once a week during the winter semester, helping them understand and digest the material and setting reading goals for the next week. By the end of the semester, mentors are expected to help their students prepare their write-up and presentation.
How do I select a project?
Have a look at write-ups and presentations from previous years. Usually a good source of projects is a textbook that has introductory content for your field of research, but is not something students will typically see in a course. Some expository and research articles could also be a great source. Some projects, especially in Statistics, can also be heavily based on computer computations and simulations.
